In celebration of the spring 2015 Student Art Show, Art Director Arthur King organized an award ceremony and barbecue in the Art Quad on April 30.

Student artists, friends and family gathered to enjoy the occasion which included caricatures drawn by students, bbq lunch to help fund the Art Department and some beautiful artwork for sale by the printmaking class. Also on display was chalk art drawn by students on the very ground where the event was held.

One of the chalk drawings that stood out to many was a very large colorful mandala that is right in the line of sight when walking into the art quad from the parking lot.

Dasha Pechurina, 21, was one of the artists that got the chance to collaborate on the mandala.

“I thought it was cool we could each put some time into it,” Pechurina said. “If it had been done alone, it probably wouldn’t be as detailed.”

One of the winners of the Art Show was Angelica Molina, 29. Molina won Faculty Award and Presidential Award for her piece “La Metamorphose de Papillon” which was also purchased for the school’s collection.

Molina’s award winning piece was a large drawing of a plant with large leaves and a couple monarch butterflies and some cocoons.

Molina mentioned that this piece was actually a final project for an art class and the assignment was to do something botanical but with no color.

Molina has been inspired by a few teachers here at DVC such as Amy Wilson and Michelle Krum.

“There are a couple of teachers that have really helped in developing my artwork,” she said. “I came from a city college, and DVC has helped me so much in working towards my animation degree.”

Some more winners of the President’s Art Award and whose art was purchased for the schools own collection were Erik Bender for a painting and Melissa Moehle for photography.

Arthur King has been the DVC Art Director since 1999, so he has seen his fair share of student art.

“Every year, the student show blows me away,” King said. “There is so much diversity and it just continues to expand.”

Every semester the Art Department has a student art show and any art students that are interested are encouraged to submit their pieces. Any questions can be directed to Arthur King.
