Rebecca Barrett is on her way to changing the world one youth vote at a time.
The DVC student is running for a seat on the Democratic County Central Committee and if elected she will be one of the youngest people ever to serve.
“I will be a representative for the youth vote,” Barrett, 19 said.
She has a knack for politics which she began exercising at age 14 when she volunteered during the Governor Gray Davis recall election.
She went on to intern for state Sen. Tom Torlakson and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Currently she is an assistant to Torlakson, who plans to run for state superintendent of public instruction 2010.
Barrett’s interest in politics goes back as far as she can remember. Although she considered being a journalist, she realized being the news would be far more interesting than reporting it.
She wants to have an effect on society. And she is inspired by Barack Obama’s campaign for change.
“Anyone who can reach the youth vote is very beneficial to this country,” Barrett said.
Like Obama, Barrett has stiff competition consisting of five people and there are only four seats open on the committee.
If elected to the Central Committee, she hopes to create a web domain dedicated to educating young people about politics. Also she will ask questions that only the younger generation would ask.
The County Central Committees helps with the Democratic Party campaigns in the county, according to its website.
County Committees are elected every two years and “during their term, they hold fundraisers, plan election activities and many open campaign headquarters.”
So far, her endorsements include Torlakson and Rocky Fernandez, president of the California Young Democrats
Political science professor, Dorene Mazzone describes Barrett as, “bright, very insightful and committed to hard work.”
She said it is important for students to know that there’s something beneficial for them to vote for in the June election.
Barrett has a candidate facebook on www.facebook.com for people who want to lend their support and stay informed about her campaign.
“I want to fight for the democratic values that we believe in, Barrett said. “I want to address …the youth and bring new life into the Central Committee.”
