Crossing Golf Club Road can be a life-changing experience – even with the stop sign and traffic light.
Over a one-year period, beginning in April 1, 2007, 224 traffic citations were issued and 12 accidents reported on the road that fronts the campus, according to Pleasant Hill Police records.
“Once I was crossing the street, and a giant truck had to stop suddenly so it wouldn’t hit me,” said DVC student Cherise White, 19.
On a recent afternoon, two drivers ran the stop sign within 15 minutes, as students crossed to the overflow parking lot or headed home after classes.
“Almost nine out of 10 times, somebody either almost hits me or cuts me off,” said Laura, a DVC student and Pleasant Hill resident of 25 years. She did not want her last name published.
But Tammie Trujillo, of district police services, said it was much worse before the college put up a fence in the parking lots to re-direct students to the cross walks.
“[Before], people used to get hit out there about once a month,” she said.
Golf Club Road serves many drivers and pedestrians, including young children who attend nearby pre-schools.
Some students said a lighted-up crosswalk could be beneficial, especially for those taking night classes.
The “flashing crosswalk” would be solar powered and eco-friendly creating less energy used, therefore less money. Costs for the “flashing crosswalk” are roughly $15,000, according to a company that makes and installs them.
Others suggested for additional police officers to be on the look out for unsafe drivers and to issue even more tickets.
“Anything helps,” Laura said.
