Dear Editor,
I had a chance to compare the Feb 12 issue of DVC’s “Inquirer” with the Jan 30 issue of Los Medanos College’s “Experience.” I was quite impressed with the way news was covered in “Experience,” which was sadly lacking in “Inquirer.”
The “Experience” heralded various subjects evenly. They had given equal importance to various activities taking place in the campus, and no student reading it would feel that the newspaper had failed to carry some important campus news. They had covered events in politics, businesses, art/entertainment, society and sports on the campus with uniform zeal.
On the contrary, “The Inquirer” missed a lot of events held by the different clubs at DVC .
Over 22,000 students attend DVC, and a lot of activities take place in the campus.
News reports occupy very less space in, “The Inquirer.” More than one-fourth of the newspaper is filled with advertisements. While I understand that advertisements bring revenue to a newspaper , I don’t think they should come in the way of important news and events appearing in the paper.
The purpose of a newspaper is educating the public with the news and the issues happening in the community. When this lacks, the purpose of the newspaper gets beaten.
Hence, I request you to pay more attention to the activities on the campus and provide a good coverage of the happenings within. This will go a long way in doing good to the student community.
