A San Francisco Bay Guardian newsstand was set on fire around 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, in the Quad by an unidentified man in a wheel chair.

After campus police officers arrived on scene, they decided not to arrest the man, instead calling an ambulance so that he could be taken for a psychiatric evaluation and an involuntary psychiatric hold known as a 5150.

“I don’t really think he knew where he was or what he was doing,” said Lt. Tom Sharp. “We got him a little help instead of arresting him.”

It is unknown whether or not the middle-aged man is a DVC student or why he decided to set the newsstand on fire.

Sharp said the newsstand was smoldering when they arrived and damaged beyond repair. “Fortunately it wasn’t a raging fire,” he said.

The officers removed the stand from the Quad.
