An 18-year-old man who died Oct. 1 in the apartment complex across from DVC after inhaling hydrogen sulfide fumes has been identified as Marcus Dominic Flamiano.
Flamiano had mixed toilet bowl cleaner and lime sulfur and locked himself in his apartment bathroom, according to a Pleasant Hill police press release.
It is not known whether Flamiano was a DVC student.
Hazmat officers in moon suits walked around the Briarwood Apartments on Golf Club Road, as police cars, ambulances and fire trucks lined the street.
The complex was roped off with caution tape for three hours and no one was allowed in or out for three hours.
The body couldn’t be removed right away as the fumes had built up in the victim’s apartment and opening it would have exposed more people to the chemical smell, Fire Marshall Richard Carpenter said.
Residents who were not evacuated were instructed not to open doors to prevent the spread of the noxious fumes.
Those who came home later were left standing on the outside of the caution tape until all the fumes were under control at 1:12 p.m., Carpenter said.
Neighbors alerted police after they smelled the fumes and became ill, Carpenter said.
Nine people were exposed and three of them were sent to a hospital as a precautionary measure, he said.
