The Vikings played their final home game of the season on fan appreciation night, Nov. 6, defeating Santa Rosa Junior College 36-6 and improving their overall record to 3-6.
Forced to forfeit all of its 2008 season games due to an ineligible player, Santa Rosa has not played as well as in past seasons, said DVC head coach Mike Darr.
Still, Darr said his Vikings were excited about playing the Bear Cubs.
“We got in a real good week of practice,” he said. “This game should be really exciting.”
Naeem Forrester scored the first touchdown for the Vikings off of an 86-yard fumble return, followed by two more by DVC in the half, including a 9-yard touchdown run for starting quarterback Blake Wayne.
The Vikings came into the second half with another touchdown scored off of a 14-yard pass by Wayne into the end-zone.
Wayne came out of the game after the third quarter, giving Kraig Pifer an opportunity to play.
Santa Rosa scored its first and only touchdown off of a 19-yard fumble return, to bring the final score to 36-6.
Darr said it took a lot for his team to play so well after suffering their most recent losses, including a 76-13 blowout from San Francisco City.
“This was the best game we’ve had in two years,” Darr said after the game. “The guys executed well and played with a tremendous amount of heart.”
The Vikings defense sacked Santa Rosa’s quarterback seven times in the game, five coming in the first half.
“This was definitely our best game of the season,” Wayne said. “The guys really wanted to win their last game on this field.”
The Vikings play their final game of the season at 1 p.m. Saturday at College of San Mateo.
“As long as we have 11 guys playing like they did tonight,” said offensive lineman Thaddeus Watkins, “we should be unstoppable.”
