Currently, an underground movement is taking DVC by storm.
Forging its way, moving recycling bins here, petitioning for compostable food containers there or educating students about recycling, the work is never done.
Every semester a green initiative, hosted by a few dedicated students, starts and ends. The proverbial torch has never been effectively passed on.
The DVC sustainability movement is a constant battle; however, due to transferring students, the work becomes harder and harder.
DVC’s not so secret Sustainability Committee has always been there to aid students in their endeavors of spreading awareness on green practices, setting in motion green projects on campus, and helping make one of California’s best community colleges the greenest as well.
Concerned students of the current semester meet them once a month, focusing on the future survival of our community, our society, and our species.
We now have a name: The Coalition for a Cleaner Campus. By discussing potential projects with other concerned persons – teachers, administration, staff and professional advocates of all things green – we strive for change.
This faction has been around for a while under various names, but has yet to become an actual committee; due to long, arduous processes to have its voice heard in the College Council (aka: the people with money and power on campus).
All we can do as the CCC is provide the students’ voice, and hope that voice is heard.
Working with the pseudo-Sustainability Committee, we propose that The CCC be added under the Space and Allocations Committee, actually receiving funding and function in DVC’s infrastructure.
The question, dear reader: How is this going to happen?
We, the Unofficial Voice of the Sustainability Committee, plan to add this proposal to the College Council’s agenda during the time for student speakers on Monday, Dec. 14.
In order to get on the agenda to get the future of the committee debated in a democratic way, we will be passing out flyers in the hours before the College Council meets to get students to show their support for the sustainability committee.
All are welcome; five minutes for a lasting change.
