The CD release of “DVC Jazz Live” features members of the Night Jazz Band and Grammy-nominated tenor saxophonist Bob Mintzer. Much of its entertainment value comes from the diversity of its track listing.
From the quick tempo and bi-band blasts in “Runferyerlife” to the smooth, almost somber, “Remember Clifford,” this album runs the gamut of all kinds of jazz. You would be hard pressed not to find a song you enjoy.
This album is permeated with pure energy and emotion. You may feel a little jolt as the almost whimsical “Camouflage” segues into a loud-and-proud saxophone solo, courtesy of Mezter. And then there’s the relaxed and silky smooth guitar solo by Greg Reginato.
Everywhere you turn this album screams diversity.
But it may face problems with an audience accustomed to jazz edited down to maximize its effectiveness in a radio environment.
Some listeners may lack patience for four- minute sax solo, followed by a four- minute bass solo.
But for those who stick it out, they will be greeted with a bit of jazz sass made famous in the ’40s and ’50s.
Smooth in some places, unabashedly loud and raucous in others, “DVC Jazz Live” has something for anyone looking for good jazz or just good music without the hype that surrounds popular music these days.
The album can be purchased digitally on iTunes and www.cdbaby.com for $9.99. You can also buy the CD from the campus ticket office weekdays between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
