The college added 96 sections to the Fall 2011 schedule between late July and early August due to growing demands and increased funds.
DVC President Peter Garcia said the school was able to add the classes because of added revenue in the current budget. “We had the classes waiting in the wings,” Garcia said.
The college was able to add 17 English and 15 math sections to the schedule.
In Spring 2011, district budget figures showed a decrease in revenue which led to 135 section closures for the summer semester and reduced offerings for the current fall semester.
Many students were unaware of the added classes but were excited about additional sections nonetheless.
“I checked daily and out of nowhere it just came up,” digital arts major Adrian Karaan said. “Math was the only class that I was having trouble getting, and now I’ve got it.”
Teachers were also positive about the news of the addition of classes. “I believe it’s great that we added classes to accommodate students,” said Donna Smith, DVC English and journalism instructor.
Smith was prepared even though she recently found out she would be teaching one of the added sections.
“I knew less than a week ago that I would be teaching this course. I was prepared, we have to be ready for changes,” Smith said.
The new classes will not alleviate the swell in demand for classes. Even with increases in reductions, students have seen diminished class offerings over the past few years.
