The Vikings went into Thursday’s game ranked number 1 in the California Community College Women’s Basketball Association (CCCWBCA) North Region poll.

In an intense game against San Joaquin Delta, the Vikings held them off with a final score of 67-62, improving their 25-1 record while remaining undefeated at home.

They walked away with a season low in total points, but still left the building with another win. Freshman Sierra Smith started a hot streak of 10 quick points in the first quarter to get the Vikings on a roll.

“Sometimes her emotions get the best of her, but when Sierra has that attack mentality, an attack to score mentality, we are a much better team,” said head coach Ramaundo Vaughn.

“Together me and her are unstoppable, she gives us that energy and keeps our heads up when sometimes there might be doubts if we can do it,” said sophomore guard Daisha Abdelkader when discussing Smith’s performance. “I love playing next to her because she pushes me and everyone to become better and those are the teammates that you love to play with.”

Abdelkader, the potential MVP finished with 29 points for the night and in the third quarter she kept them in the game.

“She’s our spark every single game,” said Smith. “We wouldn’t run without her, she’s always there to pick us up, she meant everything.”

Even coach Vaughn discussed Abdelkader’s success by stating that, “it was one of the most dominating games that I’ve seen in the nine years that I’ve been here, she took it upon herself to refuse to let us lose.”

This was the fourth game all season where the margin of victory was single digits, but women’s basketball still gained a win over SJD, as coach Vaughn wished to, “show appreciation to those sophomore’s for their hard work, their effort and leadership that they’ve done for their school.”

The Viking’s next game will be at Santa Rosa on sophomore night, Tuesday Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m.
