The Transfer Center has cancelled its annual transfer reception and transfer conference because it no longer has the funds to pay for them.
Senior Academic Adviser Nicola Place said the problem is due to increases in “fixed costs,” such as employee salaries and benefits, over which the Center has no control.
Of the Center’s three traditional events, only Transfer Day will remain.
Sponsored by the state, this event draws dozens of colleges and universities to the campus in the fall to provide information and recruit prospective DVC transfer students.
Student Cahlea Whaley said she was disappointed at cancellation of the Transfer Reception, which honors students moving on to four-year schools.
“You work really hard for the recognition and to accomplish your goals, and you’d like to invite your family friends,” said Whaley, who plans on transferring in spring 2011.
The transfer conference, which started in 2003, was a day of free workshops and talks, with information provided about all aspects of transfer, including financial aid and writing a personal statement.
In an e-mail interview, Place said the extent of budget cuts for the 2010-11 school year is not yet known, but they could include loss of funding for staff and student workers, as well as a decrease in the hours the Center is open.
Transfer Center coordinator Regan Ronayne said the cuts will come at a time when the center is trying to accommodate students who are facing unique problems because of budget reductions at the California State University and University of California campuses.
“Student transfer needs are changing,” Ronayne said. “And change costs money.”
