Diablo Valley College’s American Red Cross club will be holding their first CPR, AED and First Aid training session on Friday Nov. 30 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m at DVC. The event will be open to 30 students and will be led by two professional American Red Cross trainers. At the end of the session, participating students will have to pass a brief test and will then receive certification cards from the American Red Cross, which must be renewed every two years.
The training and certification can normally cost as much as $90, but it is being offered to students for $15 and to ARC club members, who already pay a club fee, for $10. In order to fund the event, the ARC club raised $400 on their own and received $500 from the ICC. They also requested $1300 from ASDVC, which was unanimously approved.
Nita Iwan, the club’s vice president, elaborated on the benefits of the training at ASDVC’s meeting on Nov. 13. Yvonne Canada, ASDVC’s faculty advisor, also discussed the benefits of the event. Canada reminded those at the meeting that although DVC has many automated external defibrillators on campus, “No one knows how to use them.”
To sign up for the event, students can register on the American Red Cross club’s Facebook page or look for their table on campus.
