New clubs were nowhere to be found at Club Day this semester due changes being made within the Inter-Club Council.
Club Day, which was held Tuesday and Wednesday Feb. 5-6, offered students a chance to browse and sign up for clubs. Students flocked to the booths that were set up in the Student Union quad. There were a variety of clubs present, such as the Dance Club, Engineering Student Council and The Muslim Students Association.
None of the clubs, however, were new this semester.
According to student activities coordinator, Sara Larkin, the absence of new clubs is due to changes being made to the ICC’s code, which has not been updated for a few years. Larkin asserts that the changes to the ICC’s code will make it run more efficiently and help avoid problems, such as duplicate or inactive clubs.
No requests to make new clubs will be approved until the changes are complete, so the ICC can focus all of its attention on the challenge it faces. Sara Larkin stated that the goal is to finish by the start of the fall semester, if not sooner.
Students who would like to start up a club are welcome to attend the ICC code committee meetings and give their input in order to speed up the work done to the ICC code. The first meeting will be on Thursday, Feb. 14 from 3:30 to 5:30 pm.
Despite the lack of new clubs, students are welcome to join any of the clubs that are returning this semester. Rjay Molo, a DVC music major, said that being in a club “brings people together and gives people a place to belong.”
