As we grow older, most people grow out of dressing up and trick-or-treating, but in the DVC community you don’t have to stop the Halloween spirit.
ASDVC, in conjunction with DVC’s clubs, hosted the ASDVC Halloween festival which gave students the opportunity to celebrate the holiday and sign up for clubs.
There were also several competitions and performances, including a pie eating contest, a taekwondo performance and a kendo demonstration.
Navid Nakhai, who won the first pie eating contest, thought the event was fun and a great time to look at clubs. He said that taking part in the pie eating contest was fun, but harder than he thought it would be, and made him feel horrible after eating it all so quickly.
Among the clubs present was the Circle K International Club. Brenden Capulong, who was manning the club’s table, said that the day had gone well and that they had many new sign-ups. He thought it was worth it to attend and meet new people.
His favorite part of the day had been the Kendo performance.
There was a mishap during the taekwondo sparring, when DVC student Jessica Kao accidentally kicked her partner in the forehead as he was falling. When asked about the incident, she said that it had gone well up until that point, and just felt bad about the injury, but luckily it wasn’t too serious.
Eugene Barndts, who was working the UNICEF club table, thought that it was “important to make that connection with the community” and offered that connection with games like guessing the weight of a pumpkin and coin tossing, and using candy or merchandise as prizes.
The entire point of these festivals not only to advertise the clubs and show school spirit, but according to ASDVC President Sam Park, it also brings out a “more active and vibrant community, not only to study, but to gather.”
