To Andrew O’Connor Watts, writer of “Ku Klux Kops: Shootings show racist double standard.” I have a few issues regarding the credibility of the claims you made in your opinionated editorial.

You claim that there is a “racial double standard when it comes to African-Americans and the criminal justice system which places more value on the lives of affluent Caucasians than anyone not meeting those criteria.” However, you provide no factual evidence that supports your opinion. In the story you provide about Kenneth Chamberlain, you state, “Audio and video recording which has not been released to the public allegedly shows Chamberlain in only his underwear as officers break down the door.” Not only is this a grammatically incorrect sentence, where did you get your information from if this recording has not been released to the public?

I am also confused by the story of Howard Morgan. You wrote that a first-degree murder charge was brought against Morgan after he was acquitted of initiating a shootout with police. However, nowhere in the article do you ever say that anybody was killed in the shootout. Doesn’t somebody have to die in order for there to be any such accusation? If nobody died during the shootout, I would clearly see your point.

Although I disagree with how the claims are presented in this editorial, I do agree that there is still a racial double standard in the United States. However, I believe there is progression toward stopping it. Both of the stories provided remind me of the Trayvon Martin case in the sense that there is a lot of arguing about theory and not enough evidence to prove either side right. This editorial has not persuaded me to think any different than I did before on the subject.
