Following week one of the NFL season, the 49ers and Raiders are both the owners of a ‘W’ in the win column. This is very important for both bay area franchises because both have first year head coaches.
The Oakland Raiders promoted their 2010 offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. While the San Francisco 49ers signed former Stanford University head coach Jim Harbaugh, whose brother is also a coach in the NFL, with the Baltimore Ravens.
While both bay area teams are owners of an equal winning record, I compared which win was more valuable to each team.
Offensively the Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell was less then stellar in the passing game going 13 of 22, although Campbell did throw a touchdown to fullback Marcel Reece in the first half.
The 49ers had a good start from Alex Smith. Smith had a passer Rating of 90.4, going 15 for 20 in the passing game. But Smith was surprisingly good running the ball, including a first half touchdown to give the 49ers an early lead.
Darren McFadden was the key factor in the running game for the Raiders. McFadden with this game adds on to his streak, now totaling three consecutive games he has had 100 yards of rushing or more against the Denver Broncos.
The 49ers running back Frank Gore, fresh off of hip surgery ran for 59 yards on 22 attempts. This was not the start the 49ers were looking for from their star running back.
The defenses of both teams played well. Both teams sacked the quarterback multiple times, but the 49ers had more with five over the Raiders four. Both teams secondary’s also accounted for an interception each.
The Special teams of both teams each had their high notes.
Sebastian Janikowski of the Raiders kicked a record tying 63-yard field goal. While the 49ers were able to boast the return skills of Ted Ginn Jr., who returned two kicks, one punt and one kick off for touchdowns.
Finally and I feel most important is the road versus home situation.
The road win for the Raiders was impressive against the Broncos on Monday Night Football. The Raiders swept the AFC West Division last year, going six and zero. So beating the Broncos on the road in week one is crucial to even think of a repeat of that situation in the division.
The 49ers home win, while impressive with two returns by Ted Ginn Jr. Was a home win against a weak opponent in the Seattle Seahawks. Yes, the Seahawks made the playoffs in 2010. And yes, the Seahawks beat the Saints in the first round of the playoffs last year. But 2010’s stats don’t mean anything for 2011, except for an expectation to break.
Overall I think the Oakland Raiders had the more impressive win in week one. While both teams have a 1-0 record, the road win for the Raiders to me is more impressive. But the 49ers and their fans should be pleased and hope to continue to put Alex Smith into winning form.
