Although the Vikings put up a valiant effort, it wasn’t enough to take out the strong hitting of the Ohlone Renegades on Tuesday’s game, Ohlone winning 5-2.
The Vikings tried their hardest, but even head coach Steve Ward admitted, “We didn’t pitch particularly well. Our relief pitchers did, our starting pitcher didn’t. But Ben had been really good up until that point, he just couldn’t throw the ball over the plate that day. But our relief pitchers kept us in the game.”
Pitcher Ben Brown’s head must have been elsewhere, but he did what he could despite it. After the Renegades scored three runs in the top of the 2nd inning, he managed to pick his game back up, and keep them from scoring any more runs on his watch.
Coach Ward said, “Our pitching has been our strength, I think we have the 8th ranked pitching staff in the state, but offensively we still haven’t clicked yet, and I think we’re capable of that.”
For second baseman Eddie Aguayo, this doesn’t seem to be much of a problem. He scored a run in his second inning, and made it to third plate in his third. Offense appears to be one of his strong suits.
However, Aguayo can’t be the only offense. Coach ward had this to say about scoring: “When you’re not scoring runs, when you make a couple errors, it sticks out like a sore thumb, if you’re scoring runs, who cares, but it’s exemplified because we’re not scoring runs, so every error we make seems like it really hurts us.”
Regardless of the team’s ability to score runs, they have done well so far in their season, and despite this recent loss, look like they will continue to do well, so long as their batting skills can catch up to the especially talented skills of their pitchers.
And whether or not they win or lose, they still put on a great and entertaining game. Watching them play is exciting, and as always, when they score, the interest in the game increases. The Vikings’ baseball team is a group of especially talented players, who have the potential to go extremely far this season.
There isn’t much a team like the Vikings needs, so long as they keep up the hard work in practice and bring up their skill level to where they are capable (and deserving) of being.
