Over spring break the Diablo Valley baseball team was scheduled to play several make-up games including a home game against Cosumnes River College.
Within the first inning Diablo Valley was able to execute a double play, although neither team was able to score a run. Thanks to a triple by Bryan Case, Cosumnes River was able to score two runs in the second inning while Diablo Valley managed to score only one.
The score remained locked at 2-to-1 throughout the third and fourth innings. In the fourth inning each team was only able to send three players to bat before their side was retired. A double by Devon Alexander allowed Diablo Valley to take the lead in the fifth inning and score two runs after a with a score of 2-to-3. Cosumnes River quickly regained their lead in the sixth inning by scoring two runs from a triple hit with a total of three runs during the inning, leaving the score at 5-to-3.
In the seventh inning Diablo Valley quickly made up the difference between the scores. Each of the three players to bat for Cosumnes Valley were forced out at first base. With bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning Diablo Valley scored two runs, one right after the other.
The eighth inning left the teams at another stalemate, with Cosumnes River making the only hit in the inning. In the ninth Cosumnes River was able to score a single run before getting all three Diablo Valley batters out before they could complete a hit in the bottom half, sealing a narrow victory with a score of 6-to-5.
This game was one of the many that was rescheduled because of rain. When asked if this would affect the players ability to perform Coach Ward replied “Certainly, yes. We have a lot of injuries and guys that are trying to play through injuries now and we just finished three straight weeks where we had to play four games a week because we’re trying to make up for all the rain. … we might be facing the same thing for the last couple weeks of the season”.
Diablo Valley’s previous two games against Cosumnes River College ended in defeat with scores of 8-to-0 and 7-to-5 respectively. This week the teams seemed to be evenly matched and several innings passed without either team gaining a run. This game was close, but will we be able to beat Cosumnes River next time? “Yeah, I don’t see any reason why not” said Coach Ward “The Big 8 Conference is so competitive that there’s virtually no difference between any of the teams. It really comes down to whoever screws up the least wins”.
